Contactless Limit Set to Rise to £45

Recently, the World Health Organisation (WHO) advised people against using physical cash due to the fact that the Corvid-19 virus can stick to hard surfaces for several days. They advise people to make digital and contactless payments where possible.

In response, and to help stop the spread of Corvid-19 the British Retail Consortium (BRC)– the lead trade association in the UK – has announced it is increasing the limit for contactless card payments in the UK. The story has also been confirmed by U.K. Finance, a trade association representing the payments and finance industry.

From 01 April 2020 the contactless limit will rise from £30 to £45 ($52) as part of efforts to prevent the spread of coronavirus, by increasing the limit to £45 more transaction will be able to be made without the need to handle cash and also help to reduce the need for physical contact with Chip and PIN devices, where people need to input their PIN.

The BRC have warned that it could take some time for the new limit to be implemented in all shops, but the move follows similar increases in other European Countries. Ireland will raise the contactless limit from €30 (£27.50) to €50 from the beginning of April.

BRC Head of Payments policy, Andrew Cregan, said: “The last contactless limit increase to £30 took two years to implement but, given the extraordinary circumstances we face today, this new £45 limit will be rolled out from next week. Some shops will take longer to make the necessary changes, given the strain they’re under. In the meantime, most customers can continue to make contactless payments for higher amounts using their smart phone.”

UK Finance said the changes were already being considered, but the process had been sped up as part of the industry’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.
